The theory was that the sound would drive away the teens, but wouldn't bother the adult shoppers that the stores wanted to attract. Some students are downloading a ring tone off the Internet that is too high-pitched to be heard by most adults. With it, high schoolers can receive text message alerts on their cell phones without the teacher knowing. A Welsh security company developed the tone to help shopkeepers disperse young people loitering in front of their stores while leaving adults unaffected.
The company called their product the "Mosquito. Sitting in a quiet classroom, a student can now receive calls or text messages in silence, while the teacher will be unable to hear the tone and won't have the slightest idea a phone even went off. However, when your phone "rings" everyone in the class is going to hear it and at least a few will be looking at you. The teacher will know that you've done something, and might even catch on to you having a silent ringer on your cell phone.
Of course, since the other students can still hear the sound, and some may complain since the sound is certainly not pleasant to those who can hear it. All things considered, it appears that clever teens have turned the tables on adults who attempted to control them, and to use the mosquito ringtone to their advantage against unwitting adults.
