Continentals, and now Coopers. They cut snow like butter and support the ice treatment when encountered. Other brands I'm sure have their story and are reasonable. If you have 4 x 4 and snows, yes that's better. My first Avy was the Z66, still my favourite due to the Premium ride feature.
I have a Z71 2wd now which many on this site would criticize and have , but I like the trim Z71 provide, not a 4wd option. The 2wd drive is less weight, less repair, less maintenance, less cost I would go back to the Z66 if they had a Avy..

Z71 vehicles are generally 4x4, not 2x4. Starting in , GM started offering the Z71 package on 2wd Avalanche trucks. The badging will only say Z71 instead of Z71 4x4. Therefore, the Chevrolet Avalanche requires approximately 6. The difference between a Chevy 4 by 4 and Z71 truck is that the Chevy is a 4 by 4 but the Z71 is a off road 4 by 4 but also is capable of being a off road vehicle as it can come with the off road equipment.
FlexFuel will be written on the vehicle somewhere if that vehicle is Flex Fuel. Z71 is an off road package. Z71 has beefier suspension, skid plate, ect. Contains leather interior, wood inserts on dash, and pretty much every option.
Run your hand around the bottom of the oil pan and you will find it. Z71 is an options package with skid plates and different shocks. Z71 is the "off-road" suspension package.
It adds jounce bumpers, larger shocks, and skid plates. The Z71 also have locking rear diffs.. I believe they pretty much all have 3. It's right in front of the starter up against the firewall.
You have to take the starter off. You have to buy the rims from GM and the biggest size is 22'' rims more then that you will damage your Avalanches' chassis.
They are the same gun, just one has a paintjob. If you are wanting to buy it, don't, it sucks They have relocated the fuel filter in the Avalanches. They are now inside the fuel tank and built into the fuel pump. Could be a bad oil sending unit - try a mechanical gauge to get an accurate reading. Why would you waste your time and money on that. Z71 is the Chevy "off road" package. The standard 4x4 doesnt come with as many options.
The 4x4 Chevy is just what it says, only a 4WD. The Z71 on the other hand is a 4WD but it also comes factory with skid plates, improved bilstein shocks, different gearing in the differentials smaller gears, and a locker , it has upgraded cabin air filters, and most Z71 models from and newer come with push button 4WD "on the fly". The was the only Av to have one Almost as crazy as no tranny cooler on my Z71 "tow package". There are kits to add a filter, but they sound like a PITA. I have chevy Silverado z71 wanting to see if a chevy Silverado z71 bed will fit.
